Listen to Your Mother. Stand up Straight: How Progressives Can Win in 2008 & Beyond

Friends,

At Borders Bookstore (1 South Broad St) on June 24th at 12:30 pm, my friend and collegue, Bob Creamer, will be speaking about his new book Stand Up Straight: How Progressives can win.

What are the strategies to turn this historical opportunity into long-term political realignment? How do we create a movement, engage a larger majority, win at communications and messaging? How do we convey a compelling progressive vision to inspire persuadable voter and win contests?

These are some of the topics covered in Bob's book.

Bringing real progress to Washington requires two things above all: more Democrats, and better Democrats. With Mike Waltner, we get both.

Thank you, from Maria Quiñones Sanchez

Maria asked me to share this with you....

Dear Friends,

We did it! Thank you so much for working together to help me win the Democratic Nomination for Councilperson in Philadelphia City Council's 7th District! The team we built was the best example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. On Tuesday we made history, and people are watching.

The coalition of endorsing organizations and each individual who talked to a friend, distributed literature, wrote a check, stood at a polling place, made phone calls, knocked on doors, stuffed envelopes, ran errands, held a house party, and much much more, proved that, TOGETHER, we can be strong, proud and effect real change.

This campaign focused on what is wonderful about the 7th Council District and what needs some serious attention and fixing. It focused on experience, vision and independent thinking rather than tired business as usual.

While I know that we are all taking time to rest after the frenzied last weeks of the campaign, Friends of Maria and our campaign continues. I still need your help and support and look forward to meeting with folks through the November election so that we can get started, together, on some hard work in January. I look forward to championing progressive values and out of the box ideas to move the 7th District and city forward. Your input is critical.

Thank you again for your hard work, support and generosity. This wouldn't have happened without you!

Maria

Statement of Maria Quiñones Sánchez On “Compromise Repeal“ of Campaign Finance Law

Sliding Scale Donor Limits - Just a Slippery Slope

I challenge my opponent, Dan Savage, to vote to maintain the current contribution limits in Philadelphia Mayoral campaigns. This means voting NO on the newly crafted “compromise” legislation to repeal certain provisions of the campaign finance law.

With Philadelphians clamoring for an efficient, transparent and honest government and an end to the pay-to-play culture, doing contribution caps on a “sliding scale” is just the beginning of a confusing slippery slope.

This proposal, disguised as a compromise IS pay-to-play. The citizens of this city deserve better than politicians who vote one way, than change their minds when the laws that they studied, discussed and voted for, are no longer convenient for them or their allies.

Maria Quinones Sanchez Statement on Campaign Finance Law Repeal

"The proposed legislation to repeal certain provisions of the campaign finance law smacks of political cynicism at it's worse. This proposal, if adopted, will continue the sad legacy of pay to play that has permeated city politics for so many years. The citizens of this city deserve better than politicians who vote one way, than change their minds when the laws that they studied, discussed and voted for, are no longer convenient for them or their allies.

I challenge my opponent, Dan Savage, to do the right thing and vote to maintain the current contribution limits. The supposed negative effects of benefiting millionaire candidates are minimal compared to the advantages of working to eliminate pay to play.

I've seen this game for many years and I'm convinced that campaign contribution limits are extremely important if our Democracy is going to work for the citizenry. The residents of the 7th District, where I live and am running for City Council, don’t have the ability to give thousands of dollars to candidates. They are regular working folk who want their voices and votes to be heard but are turned off by the effects of large contributions. The many people who have given my campaign $10, $50 and $100, should not be over-shadowed by suspiciously generous contributions from a select and privileged few. Most cities and states have reasonable campaign finance restrictions. Why can't Philadelphia?

This is one more reason why we should have public finance laws.

We are at a crossroads in the history of this great city. The talk is about change and getting the City on the right track; it’s about our future together. And the end of pay to play is a key component of reforming this city. Don't let City Council dash our hopes for a more efficient, transparent and honest government. I urge every City Councilperson to vote no on the repeal.

Hopefully, there's a little bit of Ann Richards in all of us...

"I did not want my tombstone to read, 'She kept a really clean house.' I think I'd like them to remember me by saying, 'She opened government to everyone,'" Richards said shortly before leaving office in January 1995.
