Bob Brady saves New Year's and the Mummers!

Kudos to the Philadelphia Inquirer today for recognizing the accomplishment of Congressman Bob Brady in saving a Philadelphia tradition as hallowed as cheesesteaks, twinkies, and the Liberty Bell.

Unfortunately in the midst of the City's budget crises, the Mummers almost fell victim to a budget cut. However, Congressman Brady, and a few other leaders, jumped into the fray to say they would personally raise the money to make sure the Parade would go on.

The Parade is not just another civic event. An 108 tradition, it comes through South Philadelphia to Center City and City Hall. It is something that unites all Philadelphians of every race, gender, economic background in a joyous celebration that ends at the seat of our city's government.

I was surprised to not see a greater pile-on in the effort to save the Mummers. I was not surprised to see Bob Brady recognize the value of this parade to the city, not to mention the children who look forward to it, and its impact for tourism and civic pride. He also saw the value of the Two Street Festival afterwards -- which also would not have happened without his leadership.

It's a tough time in the City, with the proposed closings of libraries, pools, and firehouses, and the proposed end of the Mummers. Thank goodness we have true leaders who realize that these traditions are what remind us who we are, and bind us together, so that we can tackle our challenges as one city.

Brady gets things done...

I concur with this post 110%. While some like to criticize Brady b/c he talks like a real Philadelphian and not like some CNN style pundit, one fact sometimes gets overlooked: When Bob Brady gets involved, things get done. Brady brings home the bacon time and again. Other pols just talk about problems. Brady solves them.
