Corporate Censorship of Political Speech and Organizing Online
Submitted by Hannah Miller on Mon, 11/02/2009 - 11:20am.On Friday, the Media and Democracy Coalition stood with SEIU, the Teamsters, UFCW, Healthcare for America Now, small business owners, Greenpeace, PennEnvironment, AFSCME, Change to Win, the Sierra Club, and many other groups in denouncing the regressive policies of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce at its meeting in Philadelphia.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has been fighting healthcare reform, climate change legislation, and President Obama's attempt to guarantee freedom of speech and freedom of expression online. I spoke of the growing threat from the giant corporations like Comcast that control the Internet to our freedom of speech online, and the need to make net neutrality the law.
One stimulus proposal that was different.
Submitted by Hannah Miller on Fri, 10/30/2009 - 5:28pm.This was originally a comment on the thread about the Daily News articles criticizing the way the city has approached the stimulus proposals in the ARRA.
I wanted to repost this as a standalone because I believe this was one instance of Philadelphia getting it right.

This year I had the honor of working with Media Mobilizing Project (www.mediamobilizing.org) in their successful efforts at organizing the Digital Justice Coalition, a citywide coalition of Philadelphians ranging from PhillyFIGHT to SEIU to the Taxi Workers Union to the Public School Notebook, to come together to address the city’s digital divide (one of the worst in the nation.)
Will the Birthplace of Democracy Kill Freedom on the Internet?

Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper, of Erie.
This is almost impossible to believe - but it's actually true.
About a month ago, the Obama administration announced its intent to write policy that would protect, by law, the freedom that has allowed the Internet to grow and flourish.
It's no joke that such protection is needed. Repression of the Internet by the corporations that control it has already started.
Last month, Apple told a healthcare reform group that they wouldn't carry a healthcare reform app on their AT&T network for 30 million iPhones because it was "politically charged"...
...two years ago, it was Verizon refusing to transmit text messages from NARAL Pro-choice America.
Our Chance to Build a City Where Everyone has Internet Access

From The Daily News
The Internet for Everyone
By Todd Wolfson of Media Mobilizing Project and Hannah Sassaman of the Digital Justice Coalition
PHILADELPHIA is lining up for a race with a big prize - tens of millions in stimulus money to expand Internet access. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has authorized $7.2 billion for broadband programs, with everything from tricking out community centers with high-speed lines to mapping broadband availability already on the table as fundable programs.
Public Forum on Future of Philly WiFi
Submitted by twolfson on Thu, 05/01/2008 - 2:59pm.Hey all
Media Mobilizing Project, Temple School of Communications and Theatre and a bunch of co-sponsors are hosting a public forum on the future of Philly WiFi on June 3rd. The forum will host a diverse panel of speakers, while including an open space for participants to speak about the future of the wireless Internet initiative
Under Earthlink's management, Philadelphia's wireless network has faced both technical and customer service challenges, weakening public engagement. Now is a vital time to reignite the discussion about the wireless network as Earthlink officials have announced their intention to sell or transfer the 135-square mile network. With new ownership on the horizon, a renewed opportunity exists for Philadelphia's WiFi initiative to serve as a national model for community media. The promise of a city where everyone has the potential to be connected, opens new doors for economic, social and political participation.
Rock for Net Neutrality at the Tritone on Feb 23rd
Submitted by Beth McConnell on Thu, 02/14/2008 - 5:45pm.Come to Tritone at 15th & South on Feb 23rd at 9pm for a concert to promote "Net Neutrality."
The event is sponsored by the Future of Music Coalition, PennPIRG, the Media and Democracy Coalition and other groups.
A bevy of woman-centric bands and DJs will play Tritone in support of "Rock The Net," Future of Music Coalition’s ongoing campaign for net neutrality. Appearing at the “Sugar Town” concert are Beretta 76, Victor Victor Band, KeN, Surgeon and DJ Chatty Cathy.
The Internet is an increasingly powerful tool for musicians, making the playing field more level for big record labels and the smallest bedroom recording artists. The Internet is also a critical tool for free speech and democracy, giving individuals the chance to communicate free of gatekeepers in mainstream media.
